Welding Cylinders

Now for something really stupid: let's say our hull modules are just stretched, regular cylinders with or without some bevel at the edges.  Choose them randomly and glue them together without any regard for collision, and no fancy distributions, just good-old uniform placement.

Good news: the results don't look half bad.
