Now that the tracer is starting to look pretty polished, I'm going to shift my focus to scene design. I'm trying to come up with a nice way to build the ship, but so far my attempts have been a little lackluster. My newest hope is in a "welding" technique that will assemble parts together by shooting them at a pre-existing model and attaching them in specific ways. This technique certainly makes sense for ships, which are mostly comprised of large hull pieces and lots of attachments.
Here's a test, using the method to attach spikes to a sphere. Nothing complicated yet, but the groundwork (shooting models at other models via a ray, finding the collision, and orienting with respect to the surface normal) is in place.
