Here's an up-close of the classic test ship. The ship is still as ugly as ever, but at least the nasty black edges are gone.
Something sad occurs to me, after observing this beautiful image that took 15 minutes to render: direct lighting is a really good approximation. I guess that's no surprise for diffuse surfaces. But I still don't think the path tracer has been a waste of time: it's really going to pay off when I start cranking up the physically-realistic volumetric scattering affects, coupled with the glossy surfaces :)
